    • The Nissan Leaf - a standout 100% electric vehicle

The Nissan Leaf is the top selling 100% electric vehicle in the world for good reason. Here's why I love the Leaf: 1. It is silent, smooth and extremely fast 2. It is insanely cheap to operate (i've run my 2015 68k miles) saving me $~7k+ in fuels costs vs my 22mpg suv. It's paid for itself and I run on sunshine (solar on my roof). 3. I live in a very snowy high altitude mountainous region - snow tires, traction control, a low center of gravity have proven this to be capable 4. heated seats/steering wheel are luxurious Downsides: 1. Range is limited - EV's don't operate like gas cars - its NOT fill and forget...it's like your cell phone...keep it topped off and range fades as a concern - plus there are literally 100's+ of fast chargers being built across the U.S. which will address longer trips

A great second car for local commutes. Electrical cost per mile is about 2.1 cents per mile and the reason for my purchase. Other maintenance costs are near zero, one set of tires in 30,000 miles. My 2015 S has the 6.6kw charger which is a must for me. Full charge in about 3.5 hours on my home charger. Good low-speed performance, great compared to ICE economy options. The looks are a little quirky, but the hatch design and back seat room are pretty good. I really like the standard heated seats, steering wheel, and mirrors. A few negatives: The heater is not efficient and reduces the range in the winter. This is even worse if you run the defogger with needs heat and AC. This really drains the power and reduces range. It is not a great highway car as 70mph speeds are a lot less efficient. This car is at it's best in and urban stop and go environment. Bottom line: I bought the car for the economy around town, but found I really like driving the car. As a result, I drive the car most of the time and save a lot of cost over my full-size truck which I now use only when I need a truck. This car is not for everyone, but it is a win-win for me.
    • Battery degration is really limiting its usability

The 2011 Nissan Leaf is great in everyday operation, but with four bars of battery gone already, I can now barely commute the 40 miles to work and back. What I really don't like is the way Nissan is taking care of past customers - while they have a program to sell refurbished battery for $3000 or so in Japan, in the States not only is this program not available, they've increased the price of the new battery to more than $8K. So my Leaf is now practically useless for anything more than 40 miles without any economical solution to address the range problem. I would think twice to get another Leaf from now on.
